Overcome Your Fear Of Failure By Learning To Brake

At 35, I moved with my family to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. I was following a new opportunity to lead global diversity and inclusion at a large, multinational company and mentor talented women in chasing their careers. However, I was unable to fully embrace my new life because this wonderful city had one big problem: Everyone cycled everywhere, and I couldn’t ride a bike. In fact, I was terrified every time I tried.

My fear of failure—or, more specifically, fear of falling—was holding me back. Months of bike-riding attempts manifested more fear as well as frustration with my husband, who was trying to help me learn. Then I was introduced to Scott Peltin, an executive coach based in Phoenix who my company hired. During a conversation, he brought up how he'd recently taught his 80-year-old mother something new, so I mentioned my own struggles with learning something. Surprisingly, he agreed to help me out!
